Meet our management team
Gary Gilbert – Managing Director
With 35 years local experience in the fire protection industry Gary has a wealth of knowledge to service the business’ extensive customer base.
Gary and his wife Diane launched North Coast Fire Systems in 1983. The business grew steadily with the acquisition of contracts to maintain the Essential Fire Safety Measures of major retailers, Federal and State Government Departments and aged care facilities.
In 2012-13 Gary incorporated Doug Atchison Communications and Lightspeed Communications into North Coast Fire Systems, changing the name to North Coast Fire and Security. This step added Closed Circuit TV, security systems, data cabling and phone systems to the list of services the company offered.
They haven’t looked back. North Coast Fire and Security now services the region from Coffs Harbour to Bulahdelah, employing 18 staff.
“Clients who come to us for one service often end up using them all,” Gary said. “There’s now a huge demand for CCTV – especially now that it’s so affordable. Each year the cost of equipment keeps coming down, while the picture quality and features just get better and better.”
Gary has 30 years’ experience in practical fire extinguisher and fire safety training. He has gained certificates in fire equipment maintenance, training and assessment, holds a NSW security licence. As a licensed cabler and as a qualified trainer, Gary’s able to keep his team is up to date with new systems, hardware, and safety requirements.
The one thing that hasn’t changed is Gary’s original business philosophy:
“I’ve always aimed to offer a quality product at a competitive price, backed up with excellent after-sales service.”
Paul Bennison – Operations Manager
Paul came to North Coast Fire and Security in 2015 with a background in the building and fire protection industries. A licensed cabler and fire/security alarm technician, he also holds a NSW security licence.
As Operations Manager, Paul has helped guide the company’s growth and expansion, liaising with its diverse list of 1600 public and private sector clients and overseeing the company’s day-to-day operations.
For Paul, it’s all about ensuring the little things are covered: He loves finding ways to solve his clients’ problems.
“We have hundreds of loyal clients who love that we do everything for them without stress or hassles.”
“Many operate seasonal businesses, so we liaise closely with them to get scheduled work done at a time that will cause minimal disruption to their customers, guests, residents, or staff. We ensure their systems comply with Council and insurance requirements.”
Tom Laundry – Supervising Electrician
Port Macquarie born and bred, Tom gained his electrical apprenticeship in Sydney, spending 15 years there installing and maintaining fire prevention systems. He returned ‘home’ to give his family the benefits of living in a country community.
As the supervising electrician with North Coast Fire and Security, Tom designs, quotes, and installs fire protection systems, Closed Circuit TV, security and communication systems for commercial and industrial customers of every type and size, along with public sector clients. He’s also a licensed cabler and holds a NSW security licence.
Tom believes every project’s success relies on quality design and materials, and professional installation.
“My experience in the city has given me the knowledge and confidence to tackle any project.”
Phil McDonald – Senior Electrician
Like Tom, Phil served his electrical apprenticeship in Sydney. The pair worked for the same large firm in the fire prevention sector for almost a decade.
Like Tom, Phil moved his family to the Mid-North Coast to join the North Coast Fire and Security team. As well as being a licensed electrician, he holds a NSW security licence.
Phil works across each of the company’s divisions, installing data cabling and CCTV, security and communications systems. Not into ‘one-size-first-all’ solutions, Phil relishes the challenge of tailoring a system for each client’s unique needs.
He’s acutely aware that cutting corners in a fire protection system – in fact, any electrical project – could mean property destroyed or lives lost.
“Our clients put their trust in our professionalism,” Phil said. “We have to do the job right the first time – whether it’s a residence, a small business, a hotel, a school, or an aged care facility.”
